ATR Algorithm Development Image Database

Updated: April 26, 2024

The ATR Database is a large collection of visible and MWIR imagery collected by the U.S. Army NVSED to support the ATR algorithm development community.

The ATR (Automated Target Recognition) Algorithm Development Image Database package contains a large collection of visible and MWIR (mid-wave infrared) imagery collected by the US Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) intended to support the ATR algorithm development community. This database provides a broad set of infrared and visible imagery along with ground truth data for ATR algorithm development and training.

Included in the database: MWIR imagery and visible imagery, a seven-section user’s guide, an image viewer, ground truth data, meteorological data, photographs of targets, and other documentation to assist the user in correctly interpreting the imagery. Targets include people, foreign military vehicles, and civilian vehicles at a variety of ranges and aspect angles. All imagery was taken using commercial cameras operating in the MWIR and visible bands. Calculated target temperature differentials relative to the background are provided as well.

Before requesting, please consider the following:

  • The ATR Database is 185.31 GB.  This will require sufficient hard drive space and bandwidth.
  • The estimated time it will take to download is approximately 6 hours with optimal bandwidth.  This can take significantly longer during regular business hours and/or high web traffic.
  • It is strongly recommended that this only be downloaded between 6:00pm and 7:00am EST M-F or anytime during weekend hours, as download speeds will be faster during this time.
  • If you do not have enough space for this database, it is suggested that you purchase a 1TB external hard drive to accommodate it.

Distribution Statement A. Approved for public release. (DSIAC reserves the right for final distribution.)
