The Army recently conducted an extended-range demonstration for the guided multiple launch rocket system, or GMLRS, and two 155-mm cannon artillery precision munitions, according to a service news release. The Army is prioritizing long-range precision fires as part of its strategy to prepare for a future fight against a near-peer competitor. During a limited-range test, the Excalibur M982 munition exhibited increased range, going from 40 to 62 km, officials said.

And the XM1113 Insensitive Munition High Explosive Rocket Assisted Projectile, set to replace the Army’s M549A1 rounds, reached a range of 72 km. The Army made improvements to the XM30 GMLRS that nearly doubled its range by relocating the rocket’s control fins to the rear of the device, redesigning the nose to make it more aerodynamic, adding propellant, and building in a lightweight composite motor.
