Do 5G wireless technologies have unique instrumentation requirements for E3 and performance testing?

DSIAC was asked about instrumentation requirements for electromagnetic environment effects (E3) testing of upcoming Fifth Generation, or 5G, versus existing Fourth Generation, or 4G, networking infrastructure and end user devices that would eventually be integrated into the U.S. defense enterprise. DSIAC engaged internal and external subject matter experts (SME) from multiple organizations including the Cyber Security and Information Systems Analysis Center (CSIAC), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), SURVICE Engineering, Texas Research Institute at Austin (TRI Austin), and the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy (OUSDP) to provide general commentary and address specific questions related to development of 5G testing capabilities. Additionally, an ad hoc group was formed with the intent of adding other stakeholder organizations such as the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and Muscatatuck Urban Training Center Cybertropolis for continued technical interchanges with the inquiring organization to more fully address questions and issues surrounding development of 5G testing requirements, measures of effectiveness and performance, instrumentation requirements, testbed, and facility requirements and testing procedures.
